How to Enjoy Long Family Road Trips

Road trips are one of the great American traditions, and with so many places to explore in the country, it makes sense to fit a few road trips during the time your children are growing up. If you have several children, then it can often be a much more economical way to travel compared to flying. But as a result, it can mean some long trips in the car, and taking more time to get to your chosen destinations. But being in a confined space with children for long amounts of time can be, well, a little stressful. Get the right car

Not everyone is going to be able to get a new car or hire a new car for the trip. But having the right kind of car can really make a difference on a long trip with the family. For example, you need to have a lot of space, there is no getting away from that. You need space for kids to move around and wriggle restless legs, and heck, even sleep. Plus, you need space for luggage, and all of the fun stuff that you need to take on a trip with you. So a large trunk is a must, as well as using a car with more seats than people, so there is plenty of space and seats can be put down or removed for the journey. Don’t Skimp on Snacks

With children, making sure that you have enough snacks for the journey is a must. It means you will need fewer stops along the way, and will help to keep little tummies full (and mouths busy eating, not screaming). Try to think about what might be less messy, though. Things like breadsticks or crackers can come with a lot of crumbs, especially with younger children. You could go for things like fruit snacks, jerky, and things that aren’t going to make a lot of mess. Veggie sticks are a great option too! If one person is in charge and passes the snacks out, then it means everything doesn’t get eaten all at once.

Maximize Your Break Time

Depending on the length of the journey, or the ages of the children, you are likely to need at least one stop along the way. If it is a familiar route, then you might have a favorite rest-stop to call in at. But finding one on the route, before you set off, can be a good idea. But make sure that you use the stop to your advantage. As well as using the stop for the bathroom, use it as a way to get you all moving, with some games like hide-and-seek, for example. It gives you all a chance to get the wriggles out before being back in the car.
