Why November Is the Best Time to Travel to Italy

Cheap airfare, truffles, and foliage!

For many travelers — both those who have had the chance to visit in person and those who dream of it — a trip to Italy is often envisioned in the summer, when they can stroll the piazzas eating gelato or take a dip in Lake Como.

But Italy, much like gelato, is something to be enjoyed year-round, and one of the best times to go is November.

Sandwiched between the peak seasons of summer and the winter holidays, November is a time when museum lines are shorter, restaurants are less crowded, and even airfare dips. But those aren't the only reasons to book your trip now.

Lower Airfares

Average roundtrip airfares to Rome, Milan, Venice, and Bologna were all in the $500 range for November, according to Google Flights. One roundtrip deal to Rome from New York City was as low as $450.

Hotels are often cheaper as well, as managers look to fill empty rooms.

Seasonal Produce

Late autumn is truffle season in Italy, and any fan of this seasonal mushroom is familiar with how delicious it can taste in risotto, pasta, and other local dishes. Truffle fairs are even held throughout the Piedmont region, where visitors can purchase these gems to take home.

Changing Leaves

Many U.S. residents might associate fall foliage with destinations in New England, such as Vermont, but the changing colors can be seen in much of Italy as well. Bursts of bright yellow, red, and orange dot the countryside, making for beautiful photographs.

Fall Festivals

Beyond the truffle festivals, November is also home to the Rome Jazz Festival and the Rome Film Festival, making it the perfect time for culture hounds.
