10 Cities With a Front Row Seat to the Blood Moon Eclipse

By Patrick Clarke, TravelPulse

Summer's Blood Moon

Blood moon rising near Ontario Peak, California.
The longest total lunar eclipse—or blood moon—of the 21st century will take place Friday and Saturday when the earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, creating a captivating reddish glow. While North America will be shut out of the viewing party, a handful of notable international cities are likely to have a front-row seat to the show.

Cairo, Egypt

Afternoon cityscape of Cairo, Egypt.
The Egyptian capital is in for a treat as it will benefit from not only a prime location but clear skies this summer. The total eclipse is scheduled to begin around 9:30 p.m. local time Friday, with the red glow lasting for approximately two hours.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Downtown Dubai.
Dubai will experience more than 90 minutes of totality, with the whole eclipse beginning around 11:30 p.m. local time Friday. Visitors should head to one of the top floors of any of the city's many skyscrapers for a unique view of the blood moon. Like Cairo, clear skies should make for a memorable sighting.

Perth, Australia

Elizabeth Quay in Perth, Australia.
Stargazers in Perth will need to stay up really late (or get up really early) in order to experience this summer's blood moon as the total eclipse won't become visible until 3:30 a.m. local time Saturday.

Limassol, Cyprus

The marina in Limassol, Cyprus.
Travelers exploring Limassol's famous medieval castle, museums and sculptures this summer will want to head to the city's scenic Promenade to view the blood moon Friday night, with totality starting around 10:30 p.m. local time and ending shortly after midnight.

Bangkok, Thailand

[post_ads]Bangkok locales and visitors alike will want to set their alarms for 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning to make sure they don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime blood moon. Potential rain showers could impact visibility. Nonetheless, tourists can seek out the moon comfortably from one of the destination's many beautiful hotels.

New Delhi, India

India Gate, New Delhi, India.
New Delhi will experience the total lunar eclipse around 1 a.m. local time Saturday morning, with maximum eclipse occurring just before 2 a.m. The Red Fort, the India Gate and other eye-catching attractions could make for some stellar photo opportunities.

Bucharest, Romania

The total eclipse is likely to be visible from several Eastern European cities—including Bucharest, Romania—just before bedtime Friday night so travelers exploring Little Paris won't have to go to extreme lengths for a shot to witness the blood moon.

Moscow, Russia

Moscow, Russia.
Like Bucharest, Moscow will experience totality beginning around 10:30 p.m. local time Friday. The moon will come closest to the center of the shadow at roughly 11:21 p.m. Still buzzing from the 2018 World Cup, Moscow has recently experienced a surge in interest.

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya.
Totality is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time Friday in Nairobi, Kenya, where visitors will be able to watch from one of the destination's many resort-like wildlife lodges.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini island, Greece.
There might not be a more beautiful place to see this summer's blood moon than Santorini, Greece. After all, the Greek islands are among the top 10 trending travel destinations in the world and clear skies are all but guaranteed. Visitors to the beloved island should shift their eyes to the skies around 10:30 p.m. local time Friday.
