Located in the city of Glen Cove, Mercadante Beach at Garvies Point
on Long Island, New York, is a quiet stretch of sand open to residents
of Glen Cove. On any given day, you'll see people walking their dogs in
the area, or fishing, which is a serene beach. In 2009, it was named
after the first Italian-American mayor of the City of Glen Cove,
Luke Anthony Mercadante. He was the mayor of the city and Nassau County
supervisor from 1948 until 1951. Under his second term as mayor of Glen
Cove, he was responsible for negotiating the gift of the 700 foot
frontage of a new beach and over five acres of land. This included a new
playground at Landing School.
During the summer, the city often organizes events for all ages, such as swimming
lessons for residents, learning how to row, summer sports camps, summer
tennis classes, golf camp and other activities. To find out more,
please call the Glen Cove Parks and Recreation department at (516)
676-3766.
Although not your classic wide stretch of white sand, Mercadante
Beach at Garvies Point in Glen Cove features some picnic tables and it
is a good spot to bring your lunch or a snack and to sit back and relax
while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
I haven't seen many people swimming at the beach, but there are often people fishing, and as mentioned, lots of folks bring their dogs for long walks.
