10 Reasons Why Cannes is the Perfect Honeymoon Destination

By Erin Celletti, Brides

Dreaming of a luxurious and elegant honeymoon along the French Riviera? Why just dream when you can make a Cannes honeymoon a reality? (See what we did there?) This popular city within the Provence-Aples-Cote d’Azur region boasts an enviable Mediterranean climate, with up to 12 hours of sunshine per day, perfect for those long romantic honeymoon days. Incredible beaches and cuisine, shopping, history, a convenient location and breathtaking views are only a few reasons that make Cannes, France an ideal honeymoon locale. So, here’s 10 more.
[post_ads_2]

You can stay in true luxury.

Cannes is home to some of the most beautiful, historic, and luxurious hotels on the French Riviera. For over a century The Carlton has been a home base for the elite traveling the South of France. Ornately decorated from top to bottom, the Carlton overlooks the Mediterranean and offers exclusive access to a private beach. The Carlton Restaurant on the ground floor is one of the city’s top dining establishments, so you don’t have to go far to eat well. Another top-flight option is the Grand Hyatt Martinez, which in addition to also having a private beach also boasts a luxurious heated outdoor pool. There are a number of options for those who want to save a bit of money for other activities; the Gray D’Albion may not have the history and panache of the Carlton or Martinez, but it’s located right on the main beachside road, the Boulevard de la Croisette, and also offers a private beach area for guests.

You can shop ‘til you drop.

Cannes is a shopper’s dream. There are stores EVERYWHERE. A short walk along the Croisette and you’ll pass Louis Vuitton, Van Cleef & Arpels, Longchamp, Chanel and more luxury brand name storefronts. A few blocks off the water, Rue D’Antibes is your “shopping district”, with hundreds of stores lining the street for blocks and blocks. And one of the great charms of Cannes is wandering the neighborhood and popping into independent and locally-owned shops where you’ll find exclusive, local clothes, jewelry, art and more. A warning, however: get your shopping done before Sunday, when everything but restaurants and bars are shut down.

There’s incredible food.

The Martinez is home to the Palme D’Or, the only 2-Star Michelin restaurant in town. But you don’t have to spend too much to eat great in Cannes. Thanks to its Mediterranean location and multicultural history, Cannes is a place where cuisines and flavors intersect beautifully. You’ll find excellent Neapolitan-style pizza and seafood at Bobo Bistro; La Mome has an eclectic menu featuring everything from pork belly to a wagyu beef bib to panko crusted veal in chic setting; Noun temporarily brings you across the Mediterranean to sample the best of Lebanese fare, with a prix fixe that lets you sample basically everything on the menu. For lunch, you can’t do much better than Baoli, which sits right on the beach.

You can explore.

If you’re up for a bit of traveling while on your honeymoon, Cannes acts as a great jump off point to other destinations. Major cities in Italy are a short flight away, and if you’re looking to check off another country on a day trip, the quaint beachside town of Ventimiglia is just over an hour away by train. Not to mention the rest of the Cote D’Azur is at your disposal—Nice, Antibes and Monaco are all a stone’s throw from Cannes. It’s a great home-base or stop along a larger journey.

You can hang with the stars (sort of).

While room rates, occupancy and crowds will all be bigger, Cannes is popping during festival season in May and June. The town is perhaps most known for the Cannes Film Festival, which each year sees some of the biggest stars in the world descend on the Riviera for a weeklong celebration of film. It’s some week for people watching! While a bit less famous, many celebrities arrive for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the top advertising festival in the world which takes place each year in June.

The beaches.

Whether you’re staying at a hotel that offers exclusive beach access, or head on your own to the public areas, the sand and surf at Cannes is a beautiful place to relax on your honeymoon. Picturesque mountains frame the view as you dip your toes into the warm Mediterranean. And during summer, the sun sets late into the night, meaning you can take your sweet time either getting to the beach or heading home and not have to worry about losing out on quality sun time.

You can (and should) hit the seas.

When you look out on the sea, you’ll see the blues of the beautiful sky and ocean meet together, brilliant mountains in the background…and tons of boats. The coast off the Riviera is filled with yachts, water activities, and party boats of all kinds. Don’t miss out on experiencing Cannes from the water any way you can.

You’ll love long, romantic walks on the beach.

Walking along the beach as the sun sets (or rises, if you’re up that early!) in Cannes is like nothing you’ve likely experienced. The mile-plus stretch of path along the shore that runs parallel to the Croisette is just long enough to go on a relaxing, romantic stroll without becoming a near-marathon. The town offshore is very walkable as well—head to Le Susquet, a bit away form the hubbub, where Cannes’ “old town” is located.

You will drink the best Rosé.
