It's the official beginning of winter, but don't let that deter you from visiting New Zealand in June. There are a lot of things going on and it's traditionally the start of the ski season in New Zealand's many ski and snow sport centers.

Although the weather is definitely colder, it's not unpleasantly so. New Zealand enjoys a temperate climate without huge extremes between the seasons. Nevertheless, it's going to be chilly so bring your winter clothing.

June Weather

June can be a fairly unpredictable month, with windy and wet conditions in parts of the country, especially in the North Island. However, June is one of the rainiest months of the year in the North Island, in the South Island it's one of the driest. Queenstown and other parts of Central Otago can be absolutely lovely during June.

As the month progresses, snow becomes more common in the South Island and in high areas of the central North Island (especially in the Tongariro National Park).

• The stunning snow-covered vistas of the Southern Alps in the South Island
• Low season for tourists means lower prices and smaller (if any) crowds

• Weather can be stormy and wet, especially in the North Island
• Too cold for swimming or outdoor water sports
• Many walking and hiking tracks are closed, or not advised for visiting
