Holi, the festival of colours, is one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated by hundreds of thousands each year. The festival celebrates the start of the new season and kicks off Spring in style. Hindus believe it is the perfect time to enjoy Spring’s beautiful colours and so if you do decide to visit India during Holi, grab yourself some paint and be prepared to get mucky! (Tip: Holi is the perfect place to take loads of cool photos, as everything looks spectacular once it’s been hit with paint!)

Known as the biggest carnival in the world, for one week a year the streets of Rio line for one of the biggest celebrations the world over, the Rio Carnival. The carnival hosts the dance off to end all dances off, in the shape of rival/’sister’ samba schools- which will see thousands take part, and is the climax to the whole festival.

If you want to see the competition itself you will have to shell out for a ticket- but fear not, you can get involved with other parts of the celebration as street parties erupt through the streets of Rio. Wear the brightest clothes you can, and you’re sure to party on to Copacabana from dusk til dawn!

It’s celebrated throughout the whole country, but notably Chiang Mai’s celebrations go on for approximately 6 days- making it the perfect place for tourists to visit for a true cultural immersion! A big part of Songkran is the throwing of water- so if you do decide to party in Thailand, be prepared to get splashed wherever you go!
