From shoes that can handle a security check to a cross-body bag.

As you hit the road this holiday season, don't leave home without these in-flight essentials.
A Scarf
A light scarf, like this one from White + Warren, is one of the most versatile items you can pack while traveling. Not only does the fabric serve as a fashion accessory, but it can also function as a blanket on a chilly plane. Tired? Bundle it up to use as a pillow. Heading into a religious site? Drape it over your shoulders, or use it to cover your head for modesty.
Comfortable Shoes
Despite how chic Duchess Kate looks stepping off the plane in stilettos, don't make security any more complicated than it needs to be. Head to the airport in a pair of low-heeled booties to breeze on through.
Minimal Jewelry
An international flight is not the time to test out your new statement necklace. Not only will it ensure security is a hassle, but depending on your destination, it could also make you a target for thieves. That said, there's no need to completely forgo the sparkle. Opt for smaller earrings like these periwinkle studs by Mignonne Gavigan, and minimal rings.
Compression Socks
If deep-vein thrombosis is a concern for you on long-haul flights consider wearing compression socks or tights. They even come in fun patterns now, so there's really no excuse.
Glasses
The lack of humidity on airplanes can wreak havoc on contact lenses, drying them out to the point of discomfort, so stick to spectacles while up in the air.
Lots of layers.
Travel can be unpredictable. Be prepared for any climate with layers (like this Madewell cardigan) that are easy to add or remove as the temperatures change.
Keep it (relatively) conservative.
The airport is hardly the place for your shortest skirts and deepest v-neck Ts. We're not saying you have to wear a turtleneck, but just give your look a once-over before you walk out the door.
PJs, for a long-haul flight.
For a particularly extensive travel day, consider packing a pair of chic pajamas to change into on the plane. We're partial to this cozy jumpsuit from Eberjey.
A cross-body bag
Oversized totes are nice, but when you're on the go, use to keep your hands free and your essentials safe.
