Why the Faroe Islands Are Everyone's New Favorite Travel Destination

By Sara Tardiff, Town and Country

Odds are, your newsfeed is so saturated with photos of the Blue Lagoon that you feel like you've been there...even if you've never set foot in Iceland. Considering the Narnia-like landscape and mind-blowingly cheap flights, it makes sense that travelers are flocking to the Nordic island. Believe it or not, there is another island—in fact, quite a few—that are equally magical, inexpensive, and rich with Nordic culture.

[post_ads]The Faroe Islands are just an hour and a half away from Iceland by plane. The lush archipelago is comprised of 18 volcanic islands that boast otherworldly natural surroundings, from soaring mountains to moody beaches. If you're looking to book your next trip and want to venture somewhere out of the norm (before all of your followers catch on!), the Faroe Islands should be at the top of your list. Here are 7 good reasons to book your trip ASAP.

Flights are super cheap.

Airlines have picked up on the travel trend and are upping their number of direct routes to the Faroe Islands, meaning it's easier — and way cheaper — to get there than ever before.

You'll likely find flights around $800 during any given month, but if you find a good deal to Iceland (many airlines have had sales for tickets as low as $80!), a quick flight from Reykjavik to the Faroe Islands will only set you back around $120.

There are 22 hours of sunlight in the summer.

From June to August, the islands see summer days with 22 hours of sun — meaning way more time for hiking, boating, and exploring.

Faroese food is blowing up for a reason.

It doesn't get much fresher than this: Faroese food has been making waves across the world in recent years, transforming the perception of Nordic food from simple to sophisticated. Think: the freshest seafood imaginable, locally-foraged root vegetables (almost no veggies grow above ground here!), and hardy sheep and lamb dishes.

One Faroese restaurant you cannot miss? Koks, the first Michelin-star restaurant on the islands.

You can road trip across the entire archipelago in a day.

How exactly does one island hop...with a car? The Faroe Islands have an amazing system of roads and ferries that will allow you to travel from one end of the archipelago to the other by car (or motorcycle). The winding roads and dramatic landscape will make for a road trip unlike any other.

Their capital city is just as picturesque as any European city.

Named by the Vikings, Tórshavn has everything you look for in a European city: amazing shopping, quaint cafes, a wide array of restaurant options, and plenty of cultural events. The population is only around 19,500, but that just makes for a super relaxed holiday, filled with cafe lounging and afternoon strolls.

The natural beauty is pretty unbelievable.

Probably the biggest draw to the Faroe Islands is the jaw-dropping landscape. There's a reason the archipelago's official slogan is "Unspoiled, Unexplored, Unbelievable." Each rocky, volcanic island has some of the world's most extraordinary cliffs, grassy valleys, and stunning harbors.

You'll find the most unexpected wildlife.

On the island of Mykines, there are more puffins than there are people. A lively colony lives nearby a gorgeous lighthouse, surrounded by stunning cliffs. Spend a day hiking around the island and you just might get a peek from afar.
