Visit Charlottenlund Palace in Denmark

Charlottenlund Palace is located about 10 km north of Copenhagen, Denmark. It is designed with great architectural designs and attracts many people when classical concerts are being held. It is estimated that more than 150,000 tourists visit the palace and its immediate environs every single year. It is owned by the state of Denmark and used by the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua).

History of the castle:

The history of the palace dates back to 1622 when King Christian IV ordered the establishment of a new deer park at the original site. The Palace Gardens have revolved greatly over the centuries as different patterns and fashions of vegetation have created a unique landscape. In the 1670s, some fish ponds, ditches and pathways were introduced in the garden by Ulrik Fredrick Gyldenlove. It has been established that there was a total of 404 plants in the Garden by 1684. The Palace was constructed in 1730 from materials recovered when Copenhagen Castle was demolished.

The park was a favorite spot for the public especially on Sundays.

The Palace was home to Princess Charlotte Amalie in the 18th century until she died in 1926. She introduced geometric horticulture that was characterized by yew trees and rectangular parterre beds. In the early 1990s, the Palaces and Properties Agency introduced lengthy renovations around the palace, thuja trees and boxwood bed. Parallel rows of the yew trees were also added because of the inspiration created by Princess Charlotte Amalie.

When visiting Charlottenlund Palace, you will also expect to visit the old quarters of the Danish National Aquarium that has more than 20,000 animals, Charlottenlund Forest and Charlottenlund Beach Park. The castle sits on a 14.2-hectare park that contains several buildings including a yellow building with unique timber frames and an ice house. The yellow building is home to the Royal Life Guards.

How much is the admission fee?

It is free to visit to visit the castle. All you need is a car and a tour guide to enjoy this wonderful site and create lifetime memories.

Opening during which months?

Charlottenlund Palace is only open with special arrangement but the gardens and the park are open year round. The Aquarium is open from 10 am to 6 pm on daily except Monday when it opens from 10 am to 9 pm. The Park and the gardens are open every day but special permission is required to visit the Palace itself.

How to get there by car, bus, and train:

From Copenhagen CBD you can get there by car, bus or train. When driving, it will take you about 25 minutes depending on the state of traffic. You may choose to driver via Bernfostorffsvej straight before turning right at Gentofte as you get to the Palace. This is the shortest route. You may also get there via Strndvejen or via 02 and Route 152.

When going there by bus, you can depart from Kobenhavn for 41 min and Hovedbanegarden for 56 min. The best time to catch the bus is 1 pm.

The train leaves at Kobenhavn and takes an average of 23 minutes to get there. You can board the train at 1.09 pm, 1.13 pm, 1.19 pm or 1.29 pm.
