[post_ads_2]You’ll find lots of interesting places in Pai, Thailand’s pleasant little riverside town just four hours north of Chiang Mai. Once very chilled out, Pai is now unsurprisingly a hit with visitors from all over the world and has secured its standing on the Banana Pancake Trail. And while most travelers choose to enjoy the waterfalls, hot springs, and green scenery in the area, they miss out on some special spots closer to town.
Note: To visit some of these places, you’ll need a bicycle or scooter. Grab a motorbike rental (less than US $4 per day) along with one of the many free maps and start exploring! Tip: The police regularly fine tourists without helmets -- wear one!
Wat Prathat Mae Yen[post_ads_2]
Certainly
the best place to see the sunset on a clear day, Pai’s Temple on the
Hill is a short drive just out of town to the southeast. Although the
large seated Buddha is still under construction, a few people still
gather each evening to watch the show.
The Afternoon Market
The sprawling, open-air market located
just to the west of town at the end of Raddamrong Road has all the fruit
and veggies you could ever eat. The seasonal fruits are way cheaper
than you’ll find for sale from shops and restaurants.
Pai Circus School[post_ads_2]
Ever
wanted to learn how to juggle or try walking on a slackline? The Pai
Circus School just outside of town has a trampoline, bungalows, swimming
pool, great views, and opportunities to learn tricks from other
travelers. Who knows, you may be doing the next fire show.
Bueng Pai Farm
If
you’ve got any desire to fish while on your trip, this is the place to
do so. You can also opt to stay in one of the relaxed bungalows at Bueng
Pai Farm for even better early morning or evening fishing. The lake is
full of exotic species; you can purchase a bucket of bait for an
enjoyable afternoon.
Unique Bars, Cafes, and Restaurants
These favorite places are a throwback from the ‘hippie’ backpacker vibe
of Pai’s former years. Delicious, healthy food can be enjoyed over
conversations with interesting people in peaceful settings. You'll also
find plenty of interesting bars for socializing in Pai.
Ohm Garden Cafe[post_ads_2]
Tucked
away on a side street in town and a little tricky to find, the Ohm
Garden Cafe has a positive atmosphere. The handwritten, blackboard menu
is full of delicious Thai/Western fusion food and healthy drinks. You’ll
have to get there early: business hours are only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Art in Chai
The
vibe in Art of Chai is as pleasant as the owners. You’ll find great
chai, coffee, kombucha, and healthy snacks along with a unique
atmosphere for lounging and reading. Travelers who have visited India will really appreciate the décor and products for sale.
Joy Cafe[post_ads_2]
The
owner, Joy, is the person to ask for finding natural products around
Pai. Excellent Western and Thai food are served in a great setting. If MSG is a problem for you, Joy’s is guaranteed to please. You’ll probably encounter some local martial artists from the nearby Muay Thai gym.
Good Life
Located
just around the corner from the Walking Street, Good Life serves up
healthy food and medicinal teas. You’ll find a sporadic library and even
workshops for meditation and making kombucha.
