12 Tips for International Travel

If this is your first time traveling abroad, or maybe you just need a refresher here’s a list of 12 tips you should do or bring before your trip.

Check the date

Before you think of leaving, check to see when your passport expires, and renew if you have less than nine months left.

Empty the wallet

No one will tell you this, but before you leave, empty your wallet or purse of anything you won't need. Take only the credit cards you'll actually use. If you get pickpocketed, replacing your affinity cards and Spec's key will be more hassle than you want.

Up and ATM

Check your bank or credit card company for their rules on using overseas ATMs and foreign transaction fees. And let them know where you'll be so you don't get frozen out for possible fraud.

Smile for the camera

Scan, photograph, or color copy your passport and credit cards. Keep a couple of copies and leave one with someone you trust.

Chips with that

If you have one, take a chip card with you. Much of the rest of the world has moved away from the magnetic strip.

Learn 10 phrases in the language of the country you're visiting. You will go far.

Adapt or die

Make sure you have the proper adapters for your devices.

Are you in or out?

Check to see if your destination requires entrance or exit fees.

Take old underwear and throw it out as you go.

Be a pill

Take all your prescription medications and certain key over-the-counter basics in your carry-on.

Dress for success

No matter where you are, dress modestly, in dark or neutral colors. No shorts. No minis. And for the love of Mike, no sneakers or sandals. Women, if you go to a Muslim country, have a scarf in your purse.

Phone home

Consider getting an international data plan for your phone, or use only wifi.
