September is the perfect time for a quiet getaway after the summer rush, so we rounded up the best destinations to visit in September 2018

Best for families – Singapore

Singapore’s tropical climate and vibrant city scene attract visitors from around the world. The city is an authentic mix of Chinese, Indian and Malaysian culture. On 24 September, Chinatown hosts the Mid-Autumn Festival where Chinese culture is celebrated with traditional treats such as mooncakes and fine tea.

The Night Safari is a must-see, giving adults and children a chance to see nocturnal animals in their natural habitat. Right next door is River Safari, a wildlife park boasting the world’s largest freshwater aquarium and a pair of adorable giant pandas.

Eating well is a national obsession in Singapore. From 27 to 30 September, Resorts World in Sentosa, an island off Singapore’s southern coast, will be hosting The Great Food Festival where renowned chefs from the around the world will perform their culinary magic.

After a wholesome meal, burn off the calories by cycling around Pulau Ubin. Billed as the last kampong (village) in Singapore, this rustic island is crisscrossed with cycling and walking trails.

Best for a beach break – Sicily, Italy

September is the perfect time to visit Sicily – the weather is warm, the summer crowds have abated and there are food festivals aplenty.

The warm turquoise water at San Vito Lo Capo is alluring, and after working up an appetite basking on the soft pale sands, indulge in San Vito Lo Capo’s offerings at the annual Cous Cous Festival (21 to 30 September) which features live music, cooking competitions and, of course, an abundance of couscous.

Less than two hours away from San Vito Lo Capo is Palermo. Anyone with a sweet tooth should make a beeline for the annual Sherbeth Festival (27 to 30 September), a celebration of the island’s famous gelato ice cream in Palermo.

Best for an adventure break – Livingstone, Zambia

Untamed wilderness and fascinating wildlife make Zambia an appealing safari destination, but its most famous landmark is Victoria Falls which it shares with Zimbabwe. Thrill-seekers come to bungee jump, plunging 111m (364ft) off the famous Victoria Falls Bridge into the mighty Zambezi river.

If you’d prefer to be on the river, rafting below the Victoria Falls is an equally adrenaline-filled experience.

September is the dry season in Livingstone, making it the prime time for safari. Join in conservation efforts where you can feed, ride and play with the African elephants, and track the highly endangered black rhino in the Victoria Falls Private Game Reserve.
