In honor of Maine—the Lighthouse State—we're rounding up some of the world's most impressive coastal beacons. Let's take a look!
Claim to Fame: Commissioned by John Quincy Adams in 1827, this lighthouse is forever memorialized on the state's quarter.

Where: Andros, Greece
Claim to Fame: Off the coast of the port city of Andros, this lighthouse looks like it came straight out of a storybook. The original, which was built in 1897, was destroyed in World War II—luckily an oil tycoon had it rebuilt in 1996.
Where: Norwalk, CT
Claim to Fame: If you notice a slight lean this lighthouse, you're not crazy! A hurricane hit the structure so hard in the 1930s, it caused the lighthouse to tilt.
Where: Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada
[post_ads]Claim to Fame: First lit in 1915, Peggys Point Light
is one of Nova Scotia's most-visited tourist destinations. A popular
post office was run out of the wooden structure until 2009, when it had
to close down due to mold (but you can still explore the grounds and
take photos).
Where: Port Elizabeth, ME
Claim to Fame: The oldest lighthouse in Maine,
Portland Head was commissioned by George Washington in 1787, two years
before the federal government was actually formed. The colonial-era
lighthouse was built with local rubblestone.
Where: Ludington, MI
Claim to Fame: One of 129 lighthouses across the Great Lakes (Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state!), Big Sable Point will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year.
Where: Start Point, U.K.
Claim to Fame: This 1836 structure is noted for its serious architectural highlights, which include a Gothic-inspired parapet and, inside, a cantilevered, granite staircase.

Claim to Fame: Established in 1875, this lighthouse is beloved as a great examples of the High Victorian Gothic style. But it's also believed to be haunted by the wife of one of the former keepers. Spooky!
Where: La Coruña, Spain
Claim to Fame: The oldest working lighthouse in the world, the Tower of Hercules has been in operation since the Romans built what are now the structure's foundation in the 1st century A.D. In the 18th century, the 180-foot tower was renovated with its octagonal features; it wasn't until the 1990s that the foundations were revealed.
